The Outlaw
Gatorback Skate sponsored the Outlaw Skate Race. We put quite an
effort into promotion, organization, and course selection. The pro
race had a very strong field with Eddy Matzger, Mark Farnsworth,
Daniel Reeves, Gary Bowman, Alan Marcosson, and others. It was an
awesome event and is the third race this year where Gatorback Skate
put up prize money.
Gatorback Skate provided $200.00 prize money for the pro field. Each skater who entered contributed an additional $20 to the prize purse. All money collected from the skaters was paid out in prize money for the category winner in their category. The race paid prize money to the winners of the recreational, sport, and pro categories.
The race started with Gary Bowman of team Pyro driving a very hard
strong pace. The average speed was well over 20 mph despite some
really big hills. Eddy Matzger was in trouble right from the start
with a loose skate frame. Eddy was without tools so he simply had to
pray to the skate gods that the bolt would not come out all the way.
Eddy tried to avoid pushing too hard with his left leg in an attempt
to minimize the chance that the bolt would fall out.
Halfway through the course Mark took the lead due to his superior
braking system as the course went through the downhill 180 degree
turn. Some other skaters crashed as they attempted to slowdown for the
turn. Everyone caught Mark fairly quickly.
With about 3k left Gary launched a major attack on one of the many
climbs. Mark responded with his best attempt at a counter attack.
After the attack and counter move the lead pack was reduced to Mark,
Daniel, and Eddy.
The final 1600m of the course is up hill with around 10% grade at the
bottom and then a long uphill grind to the finish. Eddy attacked at
the base of the climb and Mark was the only one who could respond.
Mark chased Eddy up the climb but the battle was a bit one sided and
Eddy took the win. Daniel Reeves held on for third place.
More great photos are available on Mark Sibert's web site. Thanks to Mark Sibert, Garth
Zoller, Marc Siegel, Dave Wysochanski and others for helping out with the race.
